The Riyadh Exhibition & Convention Center is a 127,000 sqm exhibition and conference development in north Riyadh, near King Khalid International Airport and within the Green Riyadh City Park Masterplan. Developed in collaboration with Foster + Partners, the project brings exhibition, conference and public functions together through interconnected spaces and landscaped routes.

LIMAH developed an experience and wayfinding framework for the complex, using movement, orientation, identification and digital information as connected parts of the visitor journey. The design concept, Angular Resonance, takes its cues from the project’s faceted geometry, light, material contrasts and movement.

EXPERIENCE STRATEGY AND DESIGN

The strategy considered different users and operating conditions across the venue, including visitors, VIPs, families, staff and exhibitors. Arrival sequences, crowd movement, decision points and destination hierarchy informed the framework, recognising that an exhibition venue must accommodate different patterns of use depending on event type, occupancy and operational mode.

Rather than treating navigation as a collection of isolated signs, the approach coordinated orientation, destination identification, directional information and experiential layers within one system.

FEATURE MOMENT

Angular Resonance translates elements of the architecture into the wayfinding family. Triangular forms, illuminated seams, directional light and chiselled surfaces informed the design of elements ranging from larger orientation features to more local directional information.

The intent was to create a navigational language that belongs to the architectural setting while retaining a clear hierarchy between orientation, identification and directional information.

Orientation elements use symmetry, cardinal references and cognitive mapping to help establish the relationship between arrival points, major halls and destinations.

Naming, numbering, pictograms and architectural cues support destination recognition, while directional information changes according to distance, proximity and the decision being made.

These layers allow the navigation system to respond differently at long, medium and short range rather than applying the same communication method throughout the venue.

A programmable experiential layer

The concept also includes programmable digital surfaces and projection-based interventions. Projection-mapped floors, walls and thresholds were developed as an adaptive layer capable of supporting event content, directional information and changing crowd conditions.

This creates a framework in which digital content can change with different exhibitions and operational scenarios while remaining connected to the wider spatial and navigational system. The concept positions technology as an interface within the built environment rather than as a separate communication channel.
